Theistic Evolution

What is Theistic Evolution? The simple definition is: “The belief that God directed the evolutionary process thus allowing nothing to evolve over billions of years into what we see today.” This theory is often used by Christians desiring to hold both evolutionary and Biblical views. I believe that Romans 1:20-25 can provide us some clarity.

“20 For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and Godhead, so that they are without excuse, 21 because, although they knew God, they did not glorify Him as God, nor were thankful, but became futile in their thoughts, and their foolish hearts were darkened. 22 Professing to be wise, they became fools, 23 and changed the glory of the incorruptible God into an image made like corruptible man—and birds and four-footed animals and creeping things.24 Therefore God also gave them up to uncleanness, in the lusts of their hearts, to dishonor their bodies among themselves, 25 who exchanged the truth of God for the lie, and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever. Amen.”

Apostle Paul is telling us that plenty of evidence exists all around us to prove there is a God and denial of God will lead to a darkening of our hearts. This darkening of the heart leads to unrighteousness as described in the last portion of this text.

In verses 22 and 23, we see the warning about Theistic Evolution. The wise became fools and begin to believe God is corruptible like man. The very core of evolution requires millions of years of dying and mutation to by accident get it right. Paul is telling us that an incorruptible God could not possibly have used a process like evolution as part of His Creation. Unfortunately, Christians are giving up truth for the lie of evolution theory all in an effort to get along with those of foolish and darkened hearts.
